The Archive

  • Cost: $
  • Address: 118 Congress St, Bridgeport, CT 06604

For me, it is not an exageration to say that this is my vaorite place in the entire state. During all of my breaks, and at least once a month, I go to this store and spend hours sifting through their entire selection. The Archive is a used DVD, Blu-Ray, CD, VHS, Vinyl, and Book store with a focus on horror media. In the middle of the store they sell used DVDs and Blu-rays for around $3 to $8 a film that’s sorted by the first letter. Then in the back is where they store merch for the store, a cultivated used book selection, vintage movie posters, and old magazines. Up front is where they keep the Blu Ray and 4k releases from Vinegar Syndrome: a film archivist group that takes old obscure horror film tapes and re-releases them.

The front also has one thing that helps fill up my breaks: The Archive’s sponsored and related events section. Up all the way in the front is loaded with posters discussing the local movie nights, curios expos, record expos, and other big events in the surrounding area. This is an amazing resource to look through, even if you’re not interested in the DVDs The Archive sells!

Ct Horror Fest is the premeir horror convention in Connecticut, holding 2 conventions a year around the general southwest CT area. The convention features actors from suprisingly major horror movie releases, local vendors, Vinegar Syndrome vendors for collectors, and (my favorite part) the annual costume contest.

I have friends that are admin of horror magazine sites, as well as the owners of their own horror news site, so I'm commonly invited to meet up with local businesses that they frequent. It also meant that I was there taking photos for their website, which generally gave me something to do as I stayed the entire 9 hours of day 1.

Connecticut Cult Classics, Freakout Fridays

  • Cost: $
  • Address: 165 Main St, Seymour, CT 06483

Freaky Fridays is a movie night ran by CT Cult Classics in the Strand Theater in Seymour, CT. This event is held once a month on fridays, and are around $6 a ticket. These movie nights are held to show off more underground horror movies that I would call decently popular among horror fans. Some earlier screenings include The Slumber Party Massacre, Blood Rage, and Humanoids From the Deep. Next week they are going to be showcasing Bride of Reanimatior, which is a certified cult classic!

Lake Mohegan

  • Cost: $
  • Address: Fairfield, CT 06825

I will admit that this place is an outlier compared to the other places I’ve written about, but I feel like it’s worth mentioning. I am someone who is not a huge fan of beaches, even though Connecticut and surrounding states have excellent ones. But I’m highlighting the things I like that I feel are not as well known as they should be. I am also always looking for alternative bodies of water to spend my weekends at. Lake Mohegan is the closest freshwater swimming location to me, and is also an excellently maintained one. Generally the Lake Mohegan beach location is also far less crammed full of people compared to places like Fairfield Beach, which makes it more comfortable for me. Lake Mohegan also contains a small hiking trail with a lot of dogs, as well as a spot where people let their dogs swim.
